Lessons Learned

When you are struggling… rock bottom and failure can be your biggest lessons.  A person who has experienced failure and had the courage to get back up—these lessons are a STRONG foundation on how to grow.   I have had 2 utterly heartbreaking seasons where I did not get to do what I love most —and that is competing!   That moment is  a thrill that I have always lived for.   I am often terrible at warm-ups but for some reason when it is time to compete—it is like a switch is flipped and I live for that pressure.    Then to have that taken away from me—there are just no words to describe my complete devastation.     I honestly thought my world was over.  Losing out on 2 seasons of doing what I live for…2 seasons of competitions,  a chance to earn a scholarship—ALL GONE.   True and utter heartbreak and so many tears!     Now, I can look back with a little wisdom,  these last 2 years of heartbreak and trials have taught me WAY more than 2 seasons of competing EVER could.

I have learned that I can still be a leader on the sidelines.  I can encourage and inspire others without even stepping foot on that competition floor.  I have found my true passion is helping others.  Volunteering has been incredible,  I have seen that a sincere passion for helping others can truly change lives.   I have come to understand that I have a real passion for business and age is just a number,  I started my own business, SEW Blessed, when I was just 12 years old, when my heart was breaking and I needed to find myself.  I have been making  heating pads that I sell  through several local businesses, on ETSY—shipping them all over the country and at local craft shows.     I have learned that I actually have good ideas,  I am a big picture thinker and look at things differently than others.. and that is ok.

I can’t change the past, but looking back with a little more clarity now… GOD was telling me—I have so much more in store for you!     I truly am thankful for every single day that I get to be in the gym (my happy place) but I have also learned that I can be a gymnast, a leader, a volunteer,  a student athlete and an entrepreneur!  I can do it all.   I have huge plans and this is just the beginning.   I am beyond excited for season this year.  I have put my heart and soul into this and will give it everything I have!

Thanks for following my journey!  Stay tuned—this is just the beginning.

The rest is still unwritten.

Love,

Tenley

Faith

“Hardship often prepares an ORDINARY person for an EXTRAORDINARY destiny.”

CS Lewis

This quote is something that I believe in wholeheartedly.     These last two years of my gymnastics “career” have been a struggle to say the least, but I realize now that I would NEVER have become the person that I am today without these struggles.

An injury can shatter your dreams OR you can use the experience to change EVERYTHING!

I LOVE this sport tons—truly with all my heart and soul—But I also learned that I am so much more than just a gymnast.    I have learned that I can be a leader on the sidelines.  I love encouraging others!  I love to see happiness in people around me— So, I have spent the last 2 years finding my way and realizing that one person can truly make a difference in this world.

I have learned that LIFE is not just about ME— it is about WE!    That is truly why making a difference can change everything.  When you stop obsessing about yourself—your own goals and put others first—things just have a way of working out.

The PURE happiness that I have found in volunteering,  organizing food and clothing drives for people in need,  making heating pads for the Children’s hospital…. There TRULY  is no greater happiness than helping others.     I LOVE finding new ways to make an impact on this world and helping others.

I have learned that LIFE does NOT always go your way, but if you look for the silver lining… things always have a way of working out.    Every day brings new challenges OR new opportunities–  it just depends how you look at it!

I have learned to ENJOY the journey.   Life is not just about the destination.  I have found joy in the little successes and that just makes life better.

I know that someday I will change the world…but my story isn’t finished.   I will make every single day count.   In school, gymnastics, volunteering and my Faith.    My parents have always told me –Faith can move mountains—now I understand.

ANYTHING is possible if you believe in yourself and are willing to work for it.

Stay tuned…  my story is just beginning—and the rest is still unwritten.

HANDLING ADVERSITY

Until you are broken, you don’t know what you are made of.

It gives you the ability to build yourself all over again, but stronger than ever.”

This is a quote that has truly defined who I am over the last 8 weeks.

Life had been going really well! I absolutely LOVE competing and the season was fast approaching! I can’t tell you how excited I was! I was working hard, making progress– but somehow life seems to throw you curve balls when you least expect it. Let me back up– last year I had a stress fracture in my elbow and the doctor advised me to let time heal it (which I did). Unfortunately, it started hurting again. After a dreaded trip to the doctor, he said that the best course of action is to put two screws in my elbow. My first thoughts were complete devastation, then I immediately started asking questions. How long??? How soon can I get this fixed? My DR appointment was on Friday and my surgery was scheduled two days later on Monday. I had to be at the hospital at noon, so I begged my parents to go to gym from 7-11 that morning. That turned out to be quite the challenge as I was not able to eat or drink anything the day of surgery! One hour of conditioning and 3 hours of events without water was quite the experience! After gym I went straight to the hospital. Surgery went great. I was in so much pain but ready to start the next step of the journey— Physical Therapy. Only two days after surgery –all bandages off and ready to get better! After 4 weeks of intense PT, hours and hours in the gym, at PT and at home—pushing myself to get full extension and strength back, I WAS FULLY RELEASED! ( 4 weeks might not seem like a long time—but when you can’t fully do what you love—these 4 weeks seemed like an eternity!)

Now I’m on the last leg of this journey and that is to get stronger and get all my skills back! The hardest part for me is coming back slowly and not just jumping right in, as all I wanted to do was get fully back to doing the sport I love. I am striving for progress every day—I will get there!

After the last year, I feel like I’m a pro at handling adversity and tough situations. My mom always taught me- to never focus on what I can’t do, but what I can do, in every situation. So, I went to gym every single day with the intent on perfecting every skill that I could still do, acquire new skills, get stronger, and be the best teammate I can be–cheering my friends on while they are still able to chase their dreams this season.

I have always had absolute faith that everything happens for a reason and I know that I have gotten mentally and physically stronger through this journey.

This is not at all how I envisioned this season to go, but I have found that I am so much more than a gymnast. My identity and purpose is not just to be a good gymnast—but to be a GREAT person. I think that is what I have learned most. That is why this is called a journey—it is not just the destination—but living life along the way.

What GOD is preparing you for is worth the wait”

I am working on a training video for March—so check back soon.

Stronger than ever!

I am so very blessed to practice at Texas Dreams where we have unbelievable talent that inspires me every single day.

Last week in training, I got BOTH my Full Out dismount and Jaeger on bars.  I am also working double tucks, double pikes, and double fronts on floor.

This is absolutely my favorite time of year, because I love training new skills and achieving my goals!  It is about time for school to start, which means meet season is fast approaching.   I can’t wait to get out there and compete again, because I absolutely LOVE competing and performing in front of a crowd!

Love Tenley,

Tenley Jaeger

Upgrade Time

“It’s not how bad you want it, it’s how hard you are willing to work for it!”

It is now my favorite time of the year! The time where I can power work upgrades! I absolutely love learning new skills and the feeling that all my hard work is paying off.

This summer I am attending the Region 3 College Bound Showcase where I am going to be performing and showing off all my new skills and progress! I am SO very excited. I love being able to show off all my skills I’ve worked on this off season! I feel so very blessed to be back working and competing after recovering from an elbow injury. Every day that I am in the gym being able to practice and perform is a blessing from GOD!

Fighting Back

Sometimes GOD Gives Us Hard Times
To Appreciate The Good Ones!

I have learned that Life tends to throw unexpected curve balls at you, and most of the
time, it is when you are not ready for them!

This past December everything was going really well. I was getting ready for my very
first level 10 season, which is my very favorite time of the year as I live for competing!
Right before my mock meet, I found out I had a stress fracture in my elbow. At first, it
was completely devastating, there were lots of frustration and tears but then I decided to
focus on the positive and all the things that I could do and not be sad over the things I
couldn’t. I sat down and made lists of ALL the things that I could STILL do, plus all the
upgrades that I could acquire during my “down” time. You can always get stronger, plus
I focused on the two events I could do, Beam and Floor. I acquired a ton of new skills
and new connections!

I didn’t want that one doctor’s visit to define who I am. Over the last few months I have
become a stronger person, (both physically and mentally) and I didn’t let that one little
injury affect me. Now, I am focusing on getting all of my skills back and getting a ton of
new upgrades. I am going to come back even stronger than before because through
this whole journey, I never lost faith in GOD and his plans for the future.
One of my favorite quotes is…

“Your past NEVER defines your
future!

Determination

“The happiest people don’t neccessarily have the best of everything, but they make the most of everything.”  This is quote that has guided me….I was determined to make the most of this amazing opportunity in front of me!

Going into the Western National Championship, I only had one goal and focus in mind…to hit 4 for 4 on my events!  I knew if I hit 4 for 4, then there would be nothing else I could do.  The rest would be up to the judges from there.

When I walked into the arena, I knew no matter what happened that I had to turn the page and move on.   It was so cool to be competing with the best gymnasts in the nation and representing Region 3!   I wanted to take full advantage of this incredible opportunity.

I was a little nervous, because I started on beam and was second up!  I hit my beam routine and I was very proud of myself because I didn’t let my nerves get the best of me.   Now it was on to floor.  I was last to go on floor.  It was also the last time I would compete this routine, as I am getting a new routine for next season.  I wanted to go out there and perform like there was no tomorrow!  I felt great after I hit my floor routine.  I gave it everything I had.

Next, it was on to vault.  I had one of my best vaults of the season and to top it off, I stuck my landing!   My meet was going excellent, but I still had one event left and needed to stay focused.  Bars was bitter sweet as I look back now, because it was the last time my bar coach would coach me as she is moving to California.   I’m glad she got to see me hit my bar routine one last time.  When I landed my dismount, it was one of the best feelings in the world.

I accomplished my goal!  Hitting 4 for 4 helped me get 9th in the all around, 8th on bars and floor, and 5th on vault.  I also stuck every dismount.  I feel so incredibly blessed and thank God that I got to experience this incredible moment and create memories that I will never forget.

The last few weeks, I have been working on upgrades.  I have been working really hard on getting new skills, because my goal is to make it to level 10 and qualify for Nationals next season.

One of my favorite quotes is “The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a gymnasts determination.”

I AM DETERMINED

BELIEVE

“If you’re not making mistakes, then you are not doing anything.”  John Wooden

My level 9 season had a lot of ups and downs.   I made mistakes on things and improved on things, but I never let my mistakes define who I am.   My mistakes made me work harder in the gym and believe in myself.

At the Texas State Championship, I started on beam.  I fell on mys witch leap, back tuck.  I was really sad, but I wasn’t going to let that mistake determine the outcome of my season.  I turned the page, finished the meet strong, and qualified for Regionals.

Before Regionals, I knew that I really had to believe in myself and believe in what I had to accomplish if I wanted to qualify for Western Nationals.  I went into the gym every day and gave it my all, because I knew if I gave it everything I had, I wouldn’t be sorry no matter what the outcome is.

At Regionals, I started on floor.  I was the second one up.  I had a solid floor routine. It wasn’t perfect, but no one can be perfect.  Next, I went to vault.  I was first up and had a great vault.  I got a 9.45.   Then, I went to bars.  I knew at this point that it was possible to make it to Westerns, but I had to believe.  I was very last on bars, so I had to stay calm.  I had my best bar routine of the year and scored a season high 9.65! Now, it was all up to beam.  My warmup on beam was very shaky.   I put all of that behind me and was able to perform to the best of my ability.  I hit my beam routine!   I was on cloud 9!  I got a 9.375.  At that point I knew that even if I didn’t qualify to Westerns, I had did everything I could.

It was time for awards.   I was super excited when I got second in the region on bars.   As they were getting ready to announce the all-around awards, I knew that only the top seven qualify for Westerns.  They had already announced five and I wasn’t called yet.   I was very nervous!  “In 6th place with a score of 37.775, from Texas Dreams Gymnastics, Tenley Colclasure!!” That moment was one of the best moments of my life.  I had tears in my eyes, because everything I had worked so hard for had paid off.   So when things get tough, never stop BELIEVING!

Westerns here I come!

Never Give Up!

A life spent making mistakes is more honorable than a life spent doing nothing!

I have made mistakes that I am not proud of, but you have to learn to fall, be able to get back up, and learn from it.  I had my very first Level 9 competition last weekend.  I had a great meet going until the very end.  I hit my floor, vault and bar routines.  On beam, I fell on my series, but that is OK!  You’re going to fall, but the way you get up and finish defines who you are.  Mistakes are the first step of success!

This weekend, I have my second Level 9 meet.  I am going to learn from my mistakes and I’m going to rock!  Your mistakes don’t define who you are, but the way you get up and finish does!
